Whew…posting has been minimal this week as I got a little bug and missed a day of work. How, you may ask, does missing a day of work correlate with a lack of blog posts? No, no, I don’t write my blog posts at work, but I do write them on the way to work. You see, I commute over an hour each way to work on BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) to San Francisco – and yes, I always envision the Simpsons every time I say BART.
I’ll be the first to admit: commuting s-u-c-k-s. Not only are the chairs a bit grody and the train is always full of people who seem to be coughing their germs right on my face, but you always meet…well…characters. This is the Bay Area after all! However, BART is also leaps and bounds better than driving for over an hour. I’m always able to catch up on work, my Google reader, and of course, write a few blog posts. And mad props to the BART operators as you are almost always on time!
However, the biggest scheduling hurdle commuting gives me is finding time to run. I’m usually out the door by 5 a.m. every morning to get a run in before I have to leave the house by 7. This also puts a pinch on the maximum mileage I can do in the mornings and I am simply not an after work runner. I’m usually home at 7 p.m. and by that time all I want to do is eat and relax.
So I’m curious to know, when do you run and how do you adjust your schedule to ensure that you get the appropriate mileage in?
Hi! I just wrote a post about schedules today too. I usually run after work, but it’s late afternoon and too hot. I need to start experimenting with other times.
I WISH I could run in the morning and get it out of the way! I’m out the door at 6:15 to take the train and get to work by 8. Then I leave work at 4:30, and I’m home by 6:15. By this time, it’s 100 degrees (gah, Texas heat!) and running outside is not an option 🙁 Forced to do my marathon training during the week on a treadmill = no bueno. I don’t want to even think about what time I’d need to get up in the morning to get a run in, shower, and be out the door by 6:15 haha.
I am SO way off schedule these days. I used to run at lunch but now that my son is in summer school (requiring me to drive him home during my lunch break), I’ve not been running. After work is hit or miss. Lately MISS. Maybe next week will be better.
Yes, Juls. This week is the week 🙂
I usually run in the mornings, out the door by 6 am. But when I do two-a-days I’d running in the evenings. Now that its summer, I’ve been running after my gym workout on those two-a-day days just to avoid the afternoon heat. I just go to work late…shhhhh, don’t tell!
You’re secret is safe with me…well, sorta 😉
I am NOT a morning runner! I am good at running between the hours of 11 am and 5 pm 🙂
With that being said, I do have the luxury of going into work wicked early, I’m in by 6:15, and I usually leave the office between 2-3. I know you’re not that lucky – but have you tried running on your lunch hour? Maybe that chould help you get some doubles in? During tax season I run at lunch and when I get home because some days I just don’t get out there! Good luck girlie!
Sad story, but I don’t really take lunch breaks. We kind of just eat at our desk and power through lunches. But dang! I’d go to work at 6:15 too if I could get off at 2! That’s awesome!
Lunch time usually works the best for running in my book (although it’s been quite warm lately!) and occasionally if I can find a sitter I will take a early evening stroll (around 7:30-8)…On the weekends I prefer to be up and out the door by 8 or so…otherwise I die a hot and miserable death! Good luck with your schedule!
Thanks, Erika! A 7:30 run sounds lovely and fortunately I don’t have to find a sitter for my puppy (i.e. my baby), but good luck with your running too!
My schedule flips flops all the time! Mornings are nice for shorter runs for me because I don’t like getting stressed out about getting to work late. I have run during lunch breaks before and I usually stick to a short recovery run or a shorter tempo run (6 miles or less) since it forces me to run faster knowing I need to be back at my desk at a certain time 🙂 I have also cranked out the miles post work, which is usually when I do anything over 7-8 miles during the week. It’s a hard battle with commuting and I feel your pain! 🙁
Ahhh Tara…the joys of commuting. I’m glad I have someone to sort of commiserate with 😉
