As you may recall, one of my three tips for getting healthy in the new year was to get organized and some strategies around doing so. It’s thanks to these tips that I’m able to keep my manic schedule in tact and keep my head above water. However, it’s only Wednesday and I’m starting to feel like I’m drowning a bit. “How so?” you ask. Well, I thought I’d give you a glimpse at the day in a life of a working gal/runner/fiancé/puppy mommy/commuter/life-lovin’ gal.
4:15 a.m.: Alarm #1 goes off. I alway inevitably hit snooze.
4:25-4:30 a.m.: I’m up, I’m up.
4:30 – 4:45 a.m.: Groggily (yes, that’s a word) do the puppy duties and prepare for the morning run.
4:45 – 4:55 a.m.: Drive to gym
5 – 6 a.m.: Get my gym sesh on
6 – 6:10 a.m.: Haul my booty back to the apartment (if I’m not getting ready at the gym)
6:10 – 7 a.m.: Get as ready as I can. This usually involved minimal make-up and a banana. I’ll mow the rest of my breakfast at work.
7 – 7:15 a.m.: Drive to BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit – the train I take everyday to get to work in San Francisco), which usually involves some interesting characters.
7:27 – 8:15 a.m.: BART and blog…at least I’m productive!
8:30 a.m.: Finally arrive at the office to start the “work” part of my day
8:30 – 6 p.m.: Work, work, work. I work in digital PR and I love what I do everyday! Who wouldn’t love creating social media strategies for some of the most amazing companies?!? My team is fantastically brilliant, but we work out butts off at a pace that never fails to baffle me. The day usually involves shoveling lunch in at my desk and minimal physical activity. This is something that I really would like to work on. Any advice on how to do so?
6 p.m. – 7:15 p.m.: BART home. This is usually the time when I am reading other blogs and sending love your direction.
7:15 – 7:30 p.m.: Drive home. But hey…at least there isn’t any traffic!
7:30 – 8:00 p.m.: Chat it up with the Chicken Face and Lola, and usually eat a quick dinner of some sort. This area is also one of my 2011 resolutions. I need to start preparing foods in advance so we aren’t eating the same five things for dinner every week. What are your favorite quick and easy recipes?
8 – 10 p.m.: This is where my time varies. Most of the time I’m so exhausted I flop on the couch to watch TV and work some more. But my type-A personality is always nagging at me to clean the apartment, learn how to use my new camera, continue the wedding planning and so on. But a social life? It’s a sad but true story…there’s usually not much time for it on the weekdays. How do you make time for a social life during the busy work week?
10 p.m.: Hit the sack. Yes, I go to sleep at 10 p.m. Any later and it’s almost a guarantee that I won’t make it up in time for the gym. Call me 80, but I like it.
I try to vary this routine with events in the city, but commuting late at night always scares me a bit (like I said, there’s some characters on BART, especially late at night). I’m curious though, is your weekday life pretty routine? If not, how do you ensure that it’s lively and exciting?
Happy Running!
P.S. Thank you SO much for all of your nice words about my engagment story…you all seriously made my day!

Day 29: 7 miles
Day 30: Overslept! 0 miles thus far today
Wow, you get up that early everyday?! That is amazing. I try to get up at 4:45 at least once a week for the gym but it hasn’t been happening lately because its so cold and dark in NJ at that time. We are also on our 20 billionth snow storm for the winter so it makes it pretty darn hard to get out of bed!
OKAY I AM OBSESSED WITH YOUR ENGAGEMENT STORY!!! You two are absolutely meant to be together and you are SO SO GORGEOUS. LOVE your ring too. Girl, I love your alarm clock….we are the exact same except I will be adding BOSTON BABY!! Great idea. You are one busy chick and quick easy dinner recipes are the only way to go! You are amazing and I can’t wait to meet YOU!!!
Yum…I had brussel sprouts the other day and couldn’t stop eating them. If I remember correctly I hated them as a child. I am not really sure how this worked, but my mom would tell me they were dinosaur eggs and I would eat them right up. Yes, I was an “interesting” child.
I honestly don’t know how some people get everything done in a day. I look at how clean their house is or how many hobbies they do and think…man if only. I will just sit here and watch tv.
Ummm HOLY MOLY…you wake up at 4:15?!?!?!?! Impressive! So I definitely hear you on the lack of physical activity at work, and if you find a solution definitely send it my way! My big strategy is drinking an insane amount of water, so that way I need to constantly refill and run to bathroom! I have this awesome quick and delicious recipe from America’s Test Kitchen that you should work into your routine, I have a few others too, I’ll email it over when I get home! 🙂 And for the social life, don’t even stress! I honestly LOVE weeks when I don’t have week night plans or interruptions, that way I can get tons of sleep and work out all the time! Keep on doing what you’re doing girl, you are a rockstar! April 18th will be here in no time 🙂
We are on the same schedule. I’m glad I’m not the only one wandering the streets in the dark 🙂
Thanks for your email!! I went to school at Stanford and am familar with the BART system! Other areas need to figure it out!
YOU ARE A BUSY GIRL!! WOW! I am so impressed with your dedication!! I too love my Nike Vomeros and will have to report to whether they break down faster. Though, I am not putting in the miles you are! 🙂
What kind of puppy do you have???
What a busy day! I’m currently a full-time student which gives me the flexibility and time mix it up during the day. I get up at 5:30AM with my husband (I don’t have to but I still do just to get the feeling of having a normal workday). Then I run. I usually reserve the mornings and afternoons for school work. That’s pretty much my day. My husband works 12-hour shifts so we don’t have much of a social life during the week at all. Just us, the couch and the remote control. 😉
What a long day! Oh wait I do the same thing! lol I set my alarm for the latest possible time that i have to get up and can still get to work or the gym at the right time! You are right about the 10pm bedtime! By Wednesday (aka tonight) I am ready for bed by 9:30pm and that usually helps to rejuvenate me for the rest of the week!
Wow you are on the go from sun up to sun down! Good thing you multi task!!! 🙂
You crazy girl. I go to bed at 10:00, and wake up at 7:00. I need to train myself to function on less sleep…
I live in Oakland, so my BART ride, characters and all, is luckily only 20 minutes. But you better know I have been patting my seat and feeling for dampness every day since I read your post about the wet seat…
ha you know how sucky I am at having a social life during the week EXCEPT if it involves a run 🙂
Hey, nothing wrong with flopping on the couch! No need to let additional work get in the way of the TV though…
I am trying to get back in a morning routine… I know I need to cause it is hard to want to workout after a long day at work, even if it is a desk job.
Wow you are busy! I too get up really early for the gym. I have pretty much the same routine during the week.
Great story about a day in the life! I definitely believe that you need to go to sleep at 10 PM in order to get up at 430 AM, my schedule is about 2 hours off (go to bed at 12 PM, get up at 8 AM). I guess if I ever transition to being a morning runner I would probably need to get up at 6 AM or so in order to pull it off. I might try to run CIM marathon in December after running Chicago in October, so I might try to experiment with becoming a morning runner for a month to see how it feels.
And I definitely know what you mean about characters being on BART – I’ve seen some crazy people over the years!
One time I saw a guy shaving with a razor on the train without any shaving cream, haha
Another guy was definitely on something and was growling and trying to punch a hole through the train plexiglass, haha
gotta love BART =)
And I appreciate your tips on google calendar, I adopted this for my scheduling, now on my iphone I always know my schedule wherever I go, haha
I don’t do that much during the week – I try to go to the gym at least twice a week during my winter offseason (during marathon training times I’m running 5 times a week so I don’t have that many off days). I did go bowling on Tuesday, so sometimes my friends have events, but usually it consists of either gym or reality TV haha
Hey, bowling on a weeknight = success! And that man on Bart shaving?! Why do they think that is ok?
I’m glad the Google calendar tip is helping!
Crusader Kings II, I wasn’t particularly interested in it as I felt Paradox started going in circles with previous games but demo totally sold it to me, great game so far , all this dynastic conflicts, plotting etc, real fun And still BF3, seriously I am shocked how many hours I spent on it considering: a)I am not good at and have limited experience with FPS games b) I wasn’t ( and I’m still not ) a fan of competitive pvp. Still shooting people in the face or blasting them in tanks is my almost daily fun routine.
Right oni-hts helped me sort things right out.
okkk, so i’ll comment finally. is it ok that i blog stalk you? 🙂
well, anyway, this post totally struck a chord with me since i can not for the life of me figure out a good routine trying to work a lot and keep up a good amount of mileage. i think my problem may be my need for sleep- 6 hours would be amazing!! i can not seem to function on less than 8, even when i try to train my body to do so. do you naturally just need less sleep?? a 4:15 wake up time… impressive.
Haha, I love it! And don’t worry – I’m totally a blog stalker too.
I really thing that morning running is possible for everyone and it just takes time to train your body to get used to it. I don’t go out and party or anything like that, so I think that really helps me. But I hear that it takes 27 days to break a bad habit – so I’d challenge you to try it for 27 days. If you can do that, you’ll get used to it. I (almost) guarantee it 😉 Ha!
okay, i thought i had a busy schedule, but i definitely don’t have the commute that you do. i don’t have much of a social life during the week, but i if i can fit one social lunch or dinner in, then i feel like that’s a win!
You AMAZE me! You are one dedicated person to get up that early and have a commute like that. I really do enjoy the mornings, but find it so hard to get up!
I sit on an exercise ball instead of any office chair – helps activate core and legs!
