Last night my mom came to California for what is supposed to be a weekend filled with a little R&R. Instead, we received a frantic phone call in the early morning hours from my little sister saying that the mountain behind our house in Reno was on fire, my dad was asleep and she couldn’t get a hold of him, and that she was rushing home.
My mom and I quickly called our friends and family to ensure that my sister and dad had the help they needed should they be evacuated. For those who have asked, we are ok right now and they have not yet been evacuated but thank you for your concern. However, according to the local newspaper, 12 homes have already burned down, one man suffered a heart attack and passed away while trying to evacuate his home, and the high wind warning for the day is not looking good.
For all of my friends and Reno-ites that have already been evacuated, we’re praying for you.
Also, a small word to the wise I’d like to put out there to RGJ: you should remove all paid media from your breaking news posts, photos and video. Watching Pantene Protein commercials before I watch fire ripping through the city or seeing your luxury hotel ads on the bottom of photos of houses being burned down is probably not a good idea. Just sayin’.
So here’s my PSA of the day: make sure you have a plan and home owners/renters insurance. Life is throwing some good curve balls these days.
P.S. I know I said I’d announce the Born to Run giveaway winner today – it’s being pushed to Monday. Thanks for your patience!
