Coming home for the holiday has many of the obvious perks, but for me, there’s one bonus that holds a special place in my heart: my parent’s backyard. Literally steps from our backdoor is any runner’s paradise and I was too dumb when I was younger to take advantage of it. Now every time I’m home I head straight for the trails as my dad admonished me to look out for mountain lions and perverts (P.S. he just told me if a mountain lion approaches you, stand still. If a bear approaches you, roll up in a little ball and don’t move – who knew.)
Anxious to hit the trail this morning, I woke up to my iPhone feeding me blatant lies. 30 degrees? Really?! You’re making that shiz up. No way. Stop it Siri. It’s not funny. Tell me what the real temperature is.
It turns out it was true – 30 degrees for nine miles. Oh the joy.
With my Columbia jacket, Nike tights, and bright-pink Saucony ear-warmer by my side, it turned out to be a fantastic, even a bit toasty, run. While Reno might be a consistently brown hue, it’s a hue that’s home to me.
When you go home, do you have a favorite running route that you always hit up?
Happy Running!
I don’t know if I mentioned this, but I used to live in Gardnerville (just an hour or so from Reno). It was freaking cold this time of year, and I usually took my runs to the treadmill.
I am constantly checking the weather in Sacramento on my own iPhone. I hope it’s above 40 degrees!!
My best friend from 4th grade moved to Gardnerville! I went to her wedding there too many years later 🙂 so funny.
What a coincidence! Gardnerville was such a small town when I lived there.
Advice for lions and bears.. but no good advice for encountering perverts? 🙂 haha Have fun at home!
This landscape is so gorgeous! Enjoy your time at home!
Ahhh my favorite, 30 degrees and dirt under your feet – jealous 🙂 have a great time at home!
That weather does sound perfect for running though! Reno!!!
I guess I’m always close to my hometown of Cupertino, but I love running in the hills of Stevens Creek Park – great challenging hills.
My parents live in California near the beach. So whenever I am home from college, I take every chance that I can get to run along the beach on the strand. It’s awesome!
I love going home and running on the trail right by my house. It is so peaceful and quiet. That trail looks so pretty!
looks like a gorgeous run!
Ah, that’s so pretty! I’m jealous. 30 degrees is actually pretty warm for running…it’s kinda crazy.
I love running when I go home, not because the runs are all the pretty (it’s through the suburbs…), but because they’re my old running routes from high school. I still know them like the back of my hand and it’s funny how I can still remember where the mile markers are and I even cross the street in the exact same spots. It’s oddly comforting.
That is a bit chilly! I actually love going home to Brians house because its so flat and peaceful by his parents house. I just love looking forward to being able to run in a new place every time we travel to see family!
what a gorgeous landscape! have fun at home!
Who/What is Siri?
There is this boulevard through a neighborhood at home that is right by the Tennessee River (and has some wicked hills, too). Its where I primarily run at home. Just a tad more scenic than NYC.
Awwhh… If I wasn’t already homesick for Reno due to the holidays, I sure am now!! Glad you got a good run in while you were home. I love running in Reno, even if it is a bit chilly! Up in Caughlin Ranch where my brother lives (up by the fire) and then out in Spanish Springs where my parents live have been the places where I get most of my trails in.
