I wanted to write a post about how much this week is “less than ideal” and it’s only Tuesday. This post would be the blogging equivalent of a five-year-old stomping her feet and divulging secrets such as I may or may not have forgotten some certain undergarments in my gym bag and was forced to wear my swimsuit under my work clothes in their place and other such “catastrophes.”
But then I decided that I need to get over it and move forward. But I can’t move forward without looking back a bit, so here’s how week 13 went.
Mon., 2/27: Swim/Run
A 1,500 meter workout (I had to skip a drill and a cool down) and a normal 6.5 mile Fartlek run wasn’t anything out of the ordinary, but my body wasn’t having it. Call me lethargic, call me tired, whatever it was, I just wasn’t feeling it. After discussing with my coach, I’m now on a mission to get more protein. I’ll blog about this later, but let’s summarize and just say I’m on the lookout for your best protein tips (sans red meat).
This tasted like chalk. Any other reccos for good protein sources?
Tues., 2/28: Run
Tuesday tempo day! 5.8 miles on the dreadmill increasing and sustaining the pace. Nothing too noteworthy to call out here.
Wed., 2/29: Cycle/Core
Don’t judge me for not putting the mat down while cycling. Also, don’t judge me for watching SMASH. I blame Comcast OnDemand for fueling my bad cycling TV addiction.
Thurs., 3/1: Swim
I got in the 2,000 meter swim that I missed on Wednesday. This bad boy included the usual warm-up and cool down, but also a nice new main set consisting of a 10 x (75 FORM, 50 BUILD, 25 ALL OUT) 20"RI ladder. I took full advantage of the rest between sets.
Fri., 3/2: Long Run
Have I mentioned that I love running with people? No really. Working out by yourself all week leaves me begging to get my sweat on with other people and when two of my favorites, Simon and Corinne, asked to join me for a run, I took them up on it. I may have made them stop for urgent bathroom breaks, but they’ve been warned that that’s what they get if they want to run with me. Muahahaha.
Sat., 3/3: Long Ride
Thanks for the shirt, Reno Running Company! It makes me a little homesick.
Chicken Face’s grandma turned 80 this weekend (happy birthday, nanny!) and we made the trip home to Reno for the celebration. I was told that Reno’s weekend weather wouldn’t quite be suitable for a 60 mile ride outside (nor would I know where to go), so Coach Paul created an indoor spin ride that would be appropriate for this weekend, but not so long as to go stir-crazy on a spin bike.
I ended up pedaling for 50 miles while my mom sat next to me and chatted away. Oddly enough, it made the 2 hours and 20 minutes go by ridiculously fast and then I head out for a quick 15 minute transition run. Oh altitude – how I loathe you!
Sun., 3/4: Rest
Lola got spoiled by my sister-in-law, including her very own bath robe. What’s that you say? Dogs aren’t supposed to have bath robes? SHUT YOUR MOUTH!
Sunday also consisted of family portrait day, ending up at a random furniture auction with my dad, lunch at El Pollo Loco (who doesn’t love that crazy chicken?) and the long drive home. Then it was time to wash, rinse, and repeat.
I closed out week 13 with:
8 hours and 16 minutes of training:
3,718 meters swimming
64 miles cycling
25 miles running
30 minutes core strengthening
How did your week go? Do you ever feel like venting it all to the blogoverse then wise up and think, “Oh, people might actually read this?”
Happy Running!
Sorry for your less than stellar feeling week!
I’m a fellow Bay Area resident who is several (million) steps behind you on their athletic journey. I’m really enjoying your blog. Don’t forget that on the weeks where you feel less than inspired, you’re still super-inspiring to those of us reading!
I lived off of homemade protein shakes during training: greek yogurt, frozen berries, vanilla protein powder. Seriously a daily staple. Way to keep rocking, girl!
I was going to suggest greek yogurt, but Emily beat me to it.
I may or may not like the show “Smash,” too. And ohmygoodness, a bathrobe for Lola! Hahaha!!
Great week!
As for protein, the best source is lean meat – you won’t find anything with as many grams of protein per calorie and I would avoid a lot of bars/shakes. At Costco they have this huge turkey breast that you can cut slices off for sandwiches and to put in salads so you can get way more than you would with sliced deli meat (plus less crap in it). I put 4.5 -5 oz in my salads. A place like Subway would give you 1.5 oz. I also recommend greek yogurt, black beans and tuna. To get enough protein as an endurance athlete you pretty much have to eat quite a bit of meat and/or eggs with every meal (at least 4.5-6 oz which isn’t as much as you think). I wrote a blog post about this actually if you want to check it out! http://fitnessfatale.com/2012/02/10/essential-vitamins-and-nutrients-for-ironman-training/
EAS Myoplex Strength Formula (Vanilla) or Ensure.
I hear you on “those” days/weeks. Sometimes you just gotta let it all out… other times, it’s better not to say too much.
Congrats on another solid week of training!
Oh I love that bath robe!
I loooooooooooove Lola’s bath robe!
For quick on the go protein i useBoundless Nutrition Oatmega bars, Muscle milk light or honeymilk light pre made drinks. Each are between 150-190 calories a serving and have 15-20 grams protein. I’m allergic to soy and gluten so my suggestions will always be free of those. Hope this helps! Solid week of training. Congrats!
Lola looks scarily cute with that cute bathrobe. And I can’t believe you rode for more than two hours indoors. Good thing you had someone to chat with!
Yes! I love running with people! Especially long runs. The time goes more quickly and I love the conversation. Glad you had that in week 13!
Greek yogurt (up to 14g per serving), egg whites, nuts, cottage cheese, beans, turkey jerky… Good luck with the protein quest.
Dog in bathrobe is too cute. Made my Tuesday!
i’ve been incorporating greek yogurt for more protein. it makes a great healthy dessert! and props to you for 50 miles on the trainer – i could never do it!
