I’d like to call it a blog birthday present to myself, but who am I kidding, we all know that Chicken Face wouldn’t let that fly.
No, instead I’m going to position it as an upgrade/trade-off. You see, after last weekend’s tri where I was less than pleased with my watch situation, I bit the bullet and purchased the new Garmin 910XT.
I hate this photo. I look horribly cheesy and shiny, but it’s the only one.
This baby is a true multi-sport watch and literally does things that no other multi-sport watch in the world can do. I’m talking calculating swim pace, swim distance, seamless transition features, and a long-lasting battery life…all while being uber-sleek and sexy.
Let me be the first to tell you that this thing isn’t discounted ANYWHERE. I think I reached the end of the Internet trying to find a deal or a discount code that would work, but alas, I came up empty-handed. So instead, I promised to make the following sacrifices/cuts in order to justify $399 on the new Garmin 910 XT:
- I’m selling my Garmin 405. There’s simply no need for that many watches and I can hopefully get an extra $100 to apply towards to 910.
- I used a $50 gift certificate to a local Fleet Feet that I received as a birthday present. I knew I was saving that sucker for a reason.
- I vowed not to go to Starbucks on weekdays anymore, emphasis on “weekdays.”
- I told Chicken Face that I would temporarily stop bugging him about replacing the atrocious desk in the guest room. Emphasis on “temporarily.”
- I purchased the version without the heart monitor (saved another $50) as I can still use the heart monitor that I have from my even older 305.
- I purchased it on my cash back credit card so at least there’s a couple dollars coming back my direction
- The whole “I want to get new clothes and start dressing for success at work” bit? Well, that’s not happening anytime soon.
- I’m going to sell locks of my hair to aging troll dolls.
- I’m open to renting Lola to single dudes looking to pick up women downtown in one hour increments. Wait, wait…maybe not.
- I’m going to stomp my feet and scream, “But DADDY, I want a golden egg NOOOOW.”
Triathlon training is EXPENSIVE (this is another post entirely), but it’s the sport I chose which means I’m willing to make sacrifices along the way to be able to get the gear that I need/want.
I can’t wait to try out this new beauty and overanalyze all of the data that comes with it.
What sports gear have you invested in?
Did you have to cut in other areas to be able to afford it?
Happy Running!
The aging troll dolls are going to be SO HAPPY to get your hair. 😉
It think the photo is cute!
That’s awesome it calculates swims and transitions. I felt sick when I bought my 310XT a couple years ago. Now it’s just outdated!
I always justify everything with “I’ll babysit/tutor to pay for this.” And, when I bought my Garmin, I did it at Ali’s Run For The Rabbit event so part of the proceeds went to CCFA, so I was like “oh, part of this is going to charity, so it’s ok.”
Happy blog 2nd birthday! Hope you celebrated accordingly.
I think it was a VERY justified purchase. I love my 405, but that 910 looks SO AWESOME. Maybe someday. But by someday the 910 will be out of dte too. Lol.
I wish you could understand how unbelievable jealous I am right now!! I have had my eye on that thing for a while! But since I have the 405 and a (ahem) $300 Garmin Edge for my bike (that I replaced once already when I drove off with it on the back of my car)…I don’t think I will be in the market for the 910 anytime soon 🙂
Awesome! I love my 405 and since I only use it for running, it works well enough for that.
um, did EVERYONE buy one of these suckers last week???
I just got one for my birthday today! SO EXCITED! I’m sure you’ve already come across this in your vast blog/tri search knowledge, but Ray at dcrainmaker.com has the best step-by-step guides and analysis of all the Garmins. It was the first thing I pulled up when my new toy got dropped off by the FedEx man this morning! Happy tracking!
I am not a dude nor am I looking to pick anyone up, but can I still rent Lola?
I splurged on my 405, best splurge I’ve ever made. Happy 2nd blog birthday!
I just bought new triathlon cycling shoes (which necessitated buying new cleats/pedals). Still waiting on the bike….hopefully for my birthday in October. I’d love to have the 910XT, but I’m still fooling around with my 305!
uggghhh so jealous of your 910! i have the 310, and LOVE it, but i’m super envious of all the swim features on the 910… enjoy!
Haha funny that our blogs are pretty much word for word on the whole “ironman is expensive (that’s another blog post all together)” concept. TELL ME ABOUT IT. Garmin was my single largest dollar value splurge other than the P2 but everything else adds up to waaaay more than $400! Think of this as money well spent – and the accountant in me amortized the cost of the watch over the useful life of approximately 4 years and it’s really only $9.38/month.
Sounds like a fair negotiation to me! YAYYYY enjoy the new toy. I’m getting one this weekend. 🙂
starbucks ONLY on weekends!?! yeeks… I could never… I work overtime to justify my starbucks visits =) I think I spend the most money on my shoes and my garmin which I had to have because I’m a stats person too! But yay for all your ironman success makes it money well spent!!
I think those are good enough reasons to justify your investment on that shiny new toy! Does it come in other colors? Cos I love the color of your “ex-boyfriend”, the older Garmin Forerunner 405. It looks more feminine.
i have serious Garmin envy. Can’t wait to hear what you think of the new 910XT. i have the older tri model (310xt), but it stinks at swimming (loses signal when submerged). i was excited when i heard garmin fixed those problems with the new model. enjoy it!!!
the 310xt was the first “expensive” tri gear i purchased whenever it came out (of course, i used AmEx points so i didn’t actually purchase it). i now have a shiny new tri bike and am still enjoying the honeymoon stage with it.
I just pulled my new Garmin 910XT out of the box last night!! After my 305 completly lost my bike ride during my half ironman last year I was in the market for a real “tri” watch. I also can’t wait to use it in the water.
Great job with all your training!
