It snuck up on me.
You get in the groove, focusing on that day’s workout, and the end goal of Ironman Arizona. But then one day you’ll be aimlessly updating your Google calendar and there it is. Staring at you in bright pink:
Blurry SOB.
Oh crap. Vineman is right around the corner. In fact, it’s THIS WEEKEND!
As soon as the idea of racing 70.3 settles in, an evil and serendipitous alignment of the planets occur and everything starts falling apart.
Gah – my hip hurts!
Ouch – my knee is clicking!
Ack – my shoulder hurts just lifting the groceries!
The sadistic triathlon powers that be are already testing my mental and physical fortitude as I start my final week of taper. As easy as it would be to succumb to them, I’m vowing to do my best at still working in a few bouts of training while also listening to my body and resting. I’ve already skipped a run and am most likely going to move my swim today to Wednesday to give my shoulder some more time. I’m hurting for a reason and my body is getting tired.
Damn you, taper. I hate you.
But the good news is that while my body is regaining itself this week, I’m taking fueling very seriously with many, many essential nutrients:
Oh look! A running blogger who eats frozen yogurt. Originality at its finest!
So cheers to taper nuances and pretending you love every minute of them.
Anyone else experiencing the taper from hell?
Happy Running!
you are going to do amazing! you’ve had amazing races so far this year!! I can’t wait to read all about it! This running/life blogger eats real ice cream.. i.e.: sweet cream from coldstone =)
good luck this weekend! i’m sure you’ll rock it!!
ps – i had bananas foster fro-yo the other day and it rocked my world. just saying 😉
you are going to kick butt at vineman. i’m so excited for you! try not to fight the taper – it’s exactly what your body (and mind!) need right now.
You have plenty of experience, so you know this, but you’re not going to gain fitness this week that will help you in your race. Get your body to the start line ready to go. Frozen yogurt definitely helps.
Hang in there! Looking forward to seeing you crash that thing on the weekend.
Kill it, girl. 😀
(the half ironman and the froyo)
I have Lake Stevens Half Ironman this weekend and I hate tapering!!! It kills me actually. I just have the itch to do a little more, push a little harder even though I know I shouldn’t. But don’t you worry I also am taking full advantage of the “fueling” and getting my fair share of froyo! Good luck this week, honor your body and everything will come together perfectly race day (:
What I would give to be in a taper right now, instead of sitting at the couch eating chips mode. Somehow I was focusing each day on being a couch potato and lost all my runnming fitness. 🙁 Now that I’m done with my pathetic whining, I think I’ll start attempting to run again. Baby steps.
You will be awesome for the half ironman. You’re doing this taper thing very smartly and you’ve prepared a ton!
Wow that did come up fast! Good luck this weekend! I know you will do great!
