The Race That Never Was – The SF Nike Half Marathon
Remember that nagging hip pain that I thought would go away in time for the Nike Women’s half marathon on Sunday? Well, after a couple ART treatments and a bit of rehab, I now know what I need to do to get my pelvis in tip-top shape, but it wasn’t enough for a green light on the race. It took a bit for me to come to terms with this as I have never backed out of races until this season.
You see, after I picked up my bib, dreams of “taking it easy” danced through my head and I tried to convince myself that I would be able to run the race. But thankfully I have good friends who are nice enough to slap some sense in me (thank you, Aron) and I decided to play it safe. I sold my bib and opted to spectate.
While this decision was hard to swallow, it actually worked out for the better. I decided to put together a surprise birthday party for Chicken Face on Saturday night – friends, ice cream cake, wine, beer, good food and dancing. It was a fantastic night out and worth every single step not taken during that race to be able to surprise him.
I won’t lie, waking up the next morning to make it to the city in time was a bit challenging, but once there, I met up with Katie, Jessica and Dennis to cheer all of our friends on at mile 8.

Aron and Kristin climbing Lincoln St.
How cute does Naomi look?!
After mile 8, we hustled to mile 18 where we met up with Jana to pace her in until mile 25. This girl is amazing and finished the race in just over 4 hours – I was so happy we got to be a part of her marathon experience. The extra good news is that I was able to test out running again for a steady seven miles and my hip felt great – SUCCESS!
But wait, the day gets better, after finishing and meeting up with Aron and Kristin, we were walking behind the awards stage and who does Aron spot? KARA-FREAKING-GOUCHER! Oh no, I wasn’t about to miss this opportunity like I did with Ryan Hall. We raced up to her and asked if we could take our picture together. She was so sweet and said yes, but you could also tell there was a part of her that felt like, “Damn. I’ve been spotted.” as the crowds quickly grew around her. So Kara, in the rare chance that you are reading this – thanks for taking the time to make our day! Oh, and let’s be BFFs.
Post-Kara, we made our way to brunch to chat about the only thing we know how to chat about: running.
It was a great day in the city and like my dad always says, “There’s a reason for everything.” Yet again, he’s right. No race, but still a great surprise birthday for Chicken Face and another great day with friends.
Happy Running!
The 2011 San Francisco Half Marathon Race Recap
My goal going into the San Francisco half marathon was to just have fun and keep “racing Page” on the back burner. In the past, I always tell myself this and my competitive spirit gets the best of me. But today was a different story – the running gods cursed my Garmin and in turn, it was one of the most exhilarating half marathons I can remember. So without further ado, here’s how it all went down.
The weekend started out with San Francisco ambassador meet-ups.
A quick Lululemon shake-out run with good friends.
Carbo-loading on the best donuts you will ever have in your life (Pebble’s donuts: organic and vegan in the Ferry Building).
Meeting up with Swimmy Kimmy.
And working the expo with my fellow ambassadors.
On Saturday night, I was in bed by 9 p.m. for a 3 a.m. wake-up call. A quick freeway hustle to the city and I was ready to for the 5:30 a.m. start gun. While the start time of this race is one of the most painful I’ve experienced, being done by a little after 7 and your entire day ahead of you is worth the extra cup of tea.
With my belly full of oatmeal and ¼ of a PB&J bagel, two bathroom stops and my shuffle ready to belt its tunes, I went to start my Garmin and got a seemingly sign of running doom. “Low Battery.” Again. This was impossible! I charged it all night and unfortunately, this has happened more times than I’d like to admit. Thus, I think my little hunk of red, Garmin love may be seeing its final days. (P.S. Chicken Face: my birthday is in August and that new Nike watch is looking prettttttty appealing. Hint, nudge, hint, hint.)
My original plan was to stick with the 3:20 pace group, which a friend from running club was leading. We huddled together, chatted and within moments, we were off. Far too often, I start out too fast. But with no real goal in hand and my Garmin resting in peace, I started the race casually weaving throughout the throngs of runners and chatting with friends.
As we made our way down the Embarcadero, through Chrissy Field, and across the Golden Gate Bridge, I found myself smiling.
Smiling as I took in the stunning views.
Smiling as I saw friends on the bridge and we cheered each other on.
Smiling from the perfect, cool weather.
Smiling as I saw one of the guys from the Bachelorette. (I later found out it was this guy.)
Smiling because I was running according to how my body felt – nothing else.
As I smiled my way across the bridge, I realized just how lucky I am and how life is so, so good. My legs and body can carry me across the Golden Gate Bridge, I just married the man of my dreams, I’ve met so many great people through blogging who are now good friends and so much more. I was happy, strong and ready to take on the rest of the race.
With my running high fueling me, I powered through the run at a pace that felt strong but still fun. No struggling allowed. When faced with the infamous hill climbs, I simply upped the music volume, shortened my stride and pumped my arms. No problem.
As with all of my races, as soon as I could see the finish I kicked it in. When you see that finish line, it’s time to dig deep and pretend like someone’s chasing you.
Run, push, run, breathe…DONE. 1:35.
UPDATE: I checked out the official results this morning and was shocked to see this (I guess all the super fasties took the day off):
Is it wrong that I’m abnormally excited about this?!
With that, I finished the first half marathon of the San Francisco Marathon with a smile and a great run under my belt. To top it all of, I was able to complete the Half It All Challenge and earn one of the most amazing pieces of race bling blang that I’ve never seen.
It’s a spinner medal with a different image on each side. HOLLA!
We spent the rest of the day cheering on Aron, Kristin, and Ron, which was almost as fun as the race itself. They all finished strong and had an awesome day.
So here’s to running for the love of it…
Happy Running!
2011 Goals
So here we are, 2011, and it’s already been an interesting adventure. While I can’t say it was the beginning that I had hoped for, I’m still optimistic that your adventures will bring more highs than lows and more laughter than tears.
This weekend brought a few vastly different life experiences. A close family member passed away Saturday morning, we had a wedding to attend in San Diego Saturday night, and the cold I had Christmas week is back to haunt me. While the tears were plentiful, it was actually quite beautiful seeing family from all across the west come together to celebrate her life. You will be missed, Marie.
More than anything, this weekend reminded me of the oh-so-cliché mantra of don’t let a moment of your life pass you by. It’s too short. It’s too precious. It’s full of too many stellar experiences and opportunities that make living worth it. So this year, I’m vowing not to let a moment pass me by. Live for the experiences and regret nothing. Resolutions are so 2010. Goals, ambition, and living for the moment…that’s my 2011.
Along with my new outlook for 2011, I do have more tactical goals that I want to achieve. Ready for some more cheese? Well here goes: my dad always said, “It’s not about the goal, it’s about the journey.” So along with these goals includes my quest for savoring the journey. In no particular order…
- Complete the Boston Marathon within my goal time
- Complete the Boston to Big Sur challenge alive (more on this later)
- Complete a half marathon in 1:30 or less
- Track all of my running and run 2,011 miles in 2011
- Re-learn to bike and swim
- Stay INJURY FREE
- Get MARRIED and honeymoon with Chicken Face in July 2011
- Find a new place to live (preferably something that is more than 600 sq. ft. and has a frickin’ bedroom door)
- And some more personal ones that I’ll leave you guessing about
And finally, a few of my favorite photos from this past week’s runs:
I hope everyone had a great New Years and happy running!
—————–
Day 4: 12 miles along the Embarcadero to the Golden Gate Bridge. Absolutely STUNNING run.!
Day 5: 9.2 miles with Aron and Kristin on the Lafayete/Moraga trail. MUST do more runs with friends.
Day 6: Rest/Travel
Day 7: 5 miles along the San Diego harbor. The chilly temps may be the cause of my re-born sickness.
